RMJM Design West Regent Street Scheme

RMJM has designed a new office block in Glasgow beating off competition from Elder and Cannon, and GM+AD.

Standing at 2 West Regent Street on the site of Standard Life House, RMJM has worked on the scheme for developer City Estates Plc who plan on building approximately 8,000 square metres of new grade A office space on the site and 700 square metres of ground floor retail.

Reaching ten floors tall, the proposal roughly follows the massing of the existing building when viewed from the front with double skinned glass curtain walls and contrasting stonework that cuts through the front centre vertically splitting the glass into two sections. Indentations mark every second floor on the glass sections reducing the visual impression of height by manipulating how the viewer perceives the floor count.

The back of the building differs from the pure cube like appearance by stepping up from the height of neighbouring buildings to the 10th floor on the front corner two floors at a time whilst maintain the strict geometric grid that the architects have created with the scheme.

A planning application for the scheme has now been filed with Glasgow City Council who will consider whether it gets to go-ahead in the coming months. If it does it will complete the rebuilding of this area of West Regent Street.
