Colourful Jewel House At Elephant and Castle

Metaphorm Architecture + Design has penned this colourful new residential project for Elephant and Castle in London as an entry for a competition into the future of the site.

The London based architects has designed a 12 storey building that will contain a mere 29 apartments with the existing shops currently on site relocated to the new ground floor retail. There will also be a rippling canopy overhanging the public space next to the shops.

It occupies a commanding position overlooking the junction at which Stead Street, Orb Street and two other routes all connect with the passing Rodney Road that runs along the northern edge of the site, a key south eastern approach into Elephant and Castle from Camberwell.

This position dictates the scale of the building in tower form and taller than its neighbours thus allowing it to act as a brightly decorated gateway marker, or "jewel house" as the development director, Chris Horn, terms this type of project at Elephant and Castle.

The architects have piled three coloured blocks on top of each other, red on the bottom, orange in the middle and yellow on the top with each block with each having a different configuration of apartments.

On the eighth floor will be a sheltered communal space that cuts into the tower giving residents their own sheltered outdoor space in the form of a terrace.
Colouring of the building will come in the form of glazed brick, a hardy and unfading solution that retains the palettes used no matter what the weather. The undersides of the terrace and ground floor hosting the shops meanwhile will be clad in wood.

On the bottom are three flats of 1 and 2 bedrooms on each floor whilst the middle portion has three duplex flats and the largest flats are on the upper four floors being two and three bedrooms.
