Other Information

  • Work on the church began with what is believed to be a wooden chapel in 1194 that was gradually expanded and expanded into what exists today.
  • Unusually for an English Cathedral, Newcastle contains a crown spire. This is the oldest structure of its type in the United Kingdom and only St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, built much later, features such a spire with this level of architectural detail.
