In 1974 the General Post Office proposed to build a 93 metre tall office tower on the site of the Central Telephone Exchange in Bristol topped with telecoms equipment as a mix of real estate investment and a consolidation of the microwave communications network in the South-West.
Opposition to the plan was immediate with many in Bristol worrying that historic buildings such as the Wills Memorial Tower would be dwarfed. The plan was withdrawn due to this opposition.
