Proposed for Leeds on the 8th of March 1938, the Briggate Tower was to be an Art Deco office building with a Portland Stone exterior. The scheme was cancelled due to the onset of World War 2 and never resurrected.
The scheme was located on a key site in central Leeds bounded by Briggate to the east making it ideal for the ground floor retail which the developers intended to put on the lowest floor. As it happens, this was a successful hypothesis for Briggate Properties as Marks and Spencer's flagship Leeds store is now situated precisely where the tower would have stood.
The building was to have a sheer slab of 77.7 metres with a step back and upper crown pushing the height to 94.48 metres. Topping it would be a flagpole giving it a final height of 112.77 metres.
