New City Hall

Other Information

  • The Old Town Hall in Newcastle was considered a poor comparison by the city's councillors who looked enviously at the likes of Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester.
  • Desiring a larger and grander building as befitted the status of the City of Newcastle, the council approached architect John Bryson who came up with a sprawling Baroque design to stand on the corner of Northumberland Avenue and Northumberland Street in 1886.
  • Unfortunately for the project, Bryson died in 1890 and two years later the city's municipal authorities decided that they should simply renovate the existing Old Town Hall.
