The Old Town Hall in Newcastle was considered a poor comparison by the city's councillors who looked enviously at the likes of Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester.
Desiring a larger and grander building as befitted the status of the City of Newcastle, the council approached architect John Bryson who came up with a sprawling Baroque design to stand on the corner of Northumberland Avenue and Northumberland Street in 1886.
Unfortunately for the project, Bryson died in 1890 and two years later the city's municipal authorities decided that they should simply renovate the existing Old Town Hall.
