Uniquely the spire of St Michael's in Ledbury stands atop a freestanding bell tower.
The bell tower itself dates from the early part of the 13th century and was constructed as a separate structure from the rest of the church due to stability problems of the buildings north arcade.
The current stone-clad spire was added to it between 1727 and 1734 replacing a tired timber and lead structure that was in danger of collapsing.
