Other Information

  • This iconic design was of two proposals for a new bridge over the river Wear. The other being a cheaper, conventional design.
  • On the 14th of December 2011, the Department of Transport announced £82.6m of funding enabling the crossed-fingers design to go- ahead
  • In 2013, a tendering process was begun, but the costs of building the bridge were much higher than originally thought.
  • Currently, there are plans to produce a simpler design for the bridge to replace the crossed fingers design.
