The church is built on an original Saxon church of a much older date.
The original church on the site was completely gutted by the Great Fire of London leaving only the walls which remain today. The tower and interior were rebuilt.
It is the largest parish church in the City of London.
The "without" in the name stems from the fact the church used to be just outside the walls of the City of London.
