St Dunstan of the West is a complete rebuild of an earlier church that partially occupied the site to take into account the widening of Fleet Street which saw the site boundaries move.
The church is based on St Peter's in York, a similar gothic lanterned tower church.
It was built by father and son, both called John Shaw. The younger replaced the elder when he died in 1832.
