Bolton Abbey was founded by Augustian Canons in 1154
The partially ruined Bolton Priory is still in existence as a parish church today with the old nave serving this role.
The current church rises to a height of 55 feet, the 36 metre tall tower collapsed over 200 years ago.
The site grew in size rapidly until the reformation when it was almost completely destroyed.
Work on restoration started in 1867 following the exhibiting of plans at the Great Exhibition in Crystal Palace.
