Images Other Information
- This is possibly one of Birmingham's most iconic buildings next to the new Birmingham Selfridges.
- The redevelopment of the Bullring Shopping Centre was first mooted in 1955 with Laing O' Rourke's competition entry designed by James A Roberts coming out on top, although originally the Rotunda was intended to only have 12 floors, something that was later increased.
- The building is constructed with a central core providing the main structural support with the floors supported off it. It was also designed to have a rotating top floor with a restaurant but these plans were dropped at the last minute. Despite this the original structure could still support upper floors.
- Once completed, the top floor used to be a revolving advert and clock but this was later stopped due to maintainance costs.
- The tower was targeted by the IRA in 1974 after one of two bombs placed in pubs around the city was detonated in the Mulberry Bush pub at the base of the tower. The attacks killed 21 people in total and although the tower did not collapse, caused structural damage to the towers core. The attack is still to this day the most deadly terrorist attack on the British mainland.
- Plans where put forward to demolish and replace the Rotunda with a taller tower when the first proposals for the redevelopment of the Bullring Shopping Centre were put forward in the 1990's . However, these plans were stopped after the tower was granted Grade II listing status preventing its demolition.
- Now the Bullring Shopping Centre is complete, the tower is due to be refurbished by urban splash with work starting in 2005.
