The tower was conceived, and exists today, primarily as housing for married couples with the officers on the upper floors with the only option apart from building up being to build bulkily out.
Despite being a modern housing block in a very literal sense, Spence masterplanned the entire scheme so that the tower would stand apart from the barracks more like church tower with a sculpted top like a traditional crown.
Topping the tower is the officers mess which has ceremonially had a horse ridden into it. To accommodate this Spence designed a special lift capable of taking a horse and rider up to the top floor of the tower on such occasions.
