Utrechts Curving Twin Towers

Work is underway on the expansion of the worldwide headquarters for international bankers Rabobank in Utrecht in the Netherlands.

Designed by architectural firm Kraaijvanger Urbis, the build will include partial rejuvenation of existing bank buildings and when complete will offer a gross floor area of 56,000 square metres.

The project features two towers one with a slight turn connected with a specially developed double layered glass skin giving the towers a sensual curvaciousness and much sought after transparency, this combines with what will be a complex consisting of the existing Rabobank buildings.

Utilising air rights, the entire project will be brought together by sharing a large, continuous roof that acts to connect the old with the new and serve as a visual boundary for the complex.

The Rabobank Headquarters Towers standing at 105 metres or 28 floors will be made of glass and steel offering modern, spacious open plan offices.

Large atriums also feature in the towers whilst the thin concrete floors and small cores will be used to help get past the problems of stability by reducing the weight of the structure that needs supporting.

The tower also has the highest score on the green-calc calculations making the tower the most ecologically friendly tower in Holland, an achievement not to be sneezed at in this day and age where companies are becoming increasingly obsessed with outdoing each other.

As well as being a striking and definitive addition to the Utrecht skyline the scheme will create 8000 jobs within the campus upon completion, vertical gardens and large open spaces will connect the tower and plaza to the existing complex.

Along with the complex, work will soon begin on the train station in Utrecht which will compete as one of the biggest train terminals in Europe that in the future will be able to accommodate 360,000 commuters and tourists a day.
