Metrocentre Regains Largest Mall Title

The Metrocentre in Gateshead has reclaimed its title as the largest shopping mall in the UK and Europe with the opening of a new wing - The Red Mall extension that will house the massive new Debenhams Store along with a selection of twenty smaller shops costing £85 million.

The refurbishment programme also includes a new £12 million pound transport interchange that will improve the bus and coach access with areas in the North East of England and in particular link directly with services from the centre of Gateshead. A new multi storey carpark providing an extra 1,100 spaces has also been built.

The Metrocentre is already served by its own train station on the Tyne Valley line that provides regular services to Newcastle and as far afield as Dumfries in Scotland.

As well being the largest shopping mall in the country the Metrocentre also holds a number of other titles including Europeís largest indoor amusement park, Metroland with a rollercoaster, pirate ship, dodgems, a bowling alley and an 11 screen UCI Cinema.

For those at the opposite ends of the entertainment spectrum it is the only shopping centre in the UK to have itís own chapel and full time resident chaplain, a hangover from the past when the project was dubiously financed from a theological point of view by the Church of England.
