Make Spiral Onto Leeds Skyline

Here's a first look at a new 26 floor tower planned for Leeds as part of the Carey Jones master plan for the city centre by architecture firm, Make. The Spiracle is a highly original take on the famous black and white cylindrical tower in Birmingham, the Rotunda.

As with most cylindrical buildings this one has a slender look, the curving walls help trick the eye into thinking that the building is thinner than it is, sadly though few developers like such buildings because they do not offer the most efficient floor-plates compared with squares and rectangles. Make however, has come up with a way to help circumnavigate this problem.

This scheme features a unique arrangement for a residential project with core and service risers rotating by 30 degrees for each floors creating a spiral effect running up the building, something Make boss Ken Shuttleworth had previously showed off in London on the Stirling Prize winning 30 St Mary's Axe with spiraling atriums when he still worked for Foster and Partners.

This rotation not only creates a visually exciting exterior but allows the developer to adapt the floor plates of the building much more than a traditional layout would allow and influence the outside of the building by what is going on in the interior. As a result this creates a much more organic exterior than the normal ordered results we see from a fixed planning grid with seams of glass that punctuating through what appears to be almost tears on the sides of each floor.

The foot of the tower will see a new public square created around the spiraled podium complete with cafes and general public seating whilst the top is crowned with a large glass area that will be illuminated at night.

This is just the latest of a series of unusual proposals that Make have been working on Carey Jones with in Leeds that have included the Kite Tower, a project that is almost a geometric illusion. A planning application for this scheme is still some way off but should surface in 2006 if all goes to plan.
