Take Two For Edward Woods Estate

As part of the refreshing of some of Hammersmith and Fulham's dated post-war housing stock, refurbishment work is finally beginning on the Edward Woods Estate in west London, a sixties housing development that sadly doesn't take its name from the infamous film director.

The three 75 metre tall tower blocks, Poynter House, Norland House and Stebbing House were built in 1967, and had a total of 528 apartments between them. They have long suffered a number of problems such as poor insulation both from the cold weather and outside noise, along with inefficient communal facilities and building services.

The plans by ECD Architects will see 12 million spent on refurbishing the buildings with two wind turbines added to each roof, something that perhaps every tower block in London should have given their height and the ability to easily generate power from them, and integrated into the cladding system will be solar panels.

Elsewhere new insulation will also be added that will reduce heat loss and cause the outside noise entering apartments to fall by 29 decibels, and new boilers will be added to help the towers comply with the current building regulations.

With the use of lightweight steel frames an additional four new low-carbon apartments are to be built on the top of the towers current roof levels better exploiting that space around the existing service cores, whilst the ground level areas will have a small amount of office space added to them through cannibalising the excessively sized storage area that each building has. This space will be pitched at those with small requirements, and in particular charities and community organisations.

Main contractor of the scheme, the Breyer Group, expects to have the project completed in 2011.
