Checker Board Tower Planned In Birmingham

Planned in Birmingham near the two sentinel towers and Holloway Circus on Holloway Head is this development designed by the Archial Group for Panther Securities.

Consisting of two buildings, the taller of which is twenty floors and a height of 75 metres, the planning application refers to only the southern part of 49-51 Holloway Head meaning overall development of the site will be phased a section at a time.

The £70 million project is being developed to house not only 303 apartments but also a new three star hotel with 131 bedrooms, conference facilities and casino plus a car showroom and workshop on the ground floor. The plans also include the new headquarters for the Girl Guides.

The tower element will have slender rectangular floor-plates with curving ends with floor to ceiling glass offering triple aspect views from within. The other faces of the building will have a checker board façade with cream panels in between squares of glazing 10 squares wide with one horizontal strip of squares for each floor.

Although the plans are hardly landmark and shorter than many neighbouring buildings, the scale of the scheme is still relatively large and it will go some way towards marking out further the edges of the city centre of Birmingham and in particular the western approach to Holloway Circus.
