The development features an entire stretch of buildings laid along the quayside with their heights varying from five to nine floors overlooking a new landscaped public area. Clad in glass and also stone to help them fit in with the adjacent remaining Edwardian buildings, the project features at its heart a new and much needed 4/5 star hotel with 120 bedrooms, and 20,000 square metres of grade A office space of which very little has been built in the area in recent times. Also included in the development is a key 1,200 square metre bar / restaurant whilst further drinking and dining space will be provided in the listed buildings on site which will be retained and renovated allowing them to once again be brought to life. In the nearby Ochre Yards the developer has already gone some way to adding a residential element with over 600 apartments that are situated in a combination of new-build and renovated properties with the latter able to offer some individual Edwardian character to residents. Whether the development actually goes ahead remains to be seen. UK Land Estates has also dreamed up 57 Quayside but despite that project having been in existence for several years there has been little movement on it. It's not all bad though as the company shares the Chairman with the Baltic and the Newcastle Gateshead Initiative showing they most definitely have some friends in high places. |
