BUJ Designs For 40 Marsh Wall Revealed

Adding to what is well on its way towards becoming the leading skyscraper cluster in Europe by a New York mile is this new planning proposal by BUJ Architects for a hundred metre plus building overlooking Marsh Wall.

The site is next to other planned towers on Cuba Street and the under construction Landmark Towers and will see the erection of a 305 bedroom, 39 floor boutique hotel of approximately 127 metres in height marking a modest step down from the Landmark next door.

With only a small triangular footprint on the site the architect has been severely limited in what they can come up with so have opted for an extruded wedge that intersects with a higher rectangular section creating a building that roughly follows a curving frontage along Marsh Wall. This will stand on a small trapezoid podium that rises 9 floors with the tower above it cantilevering out above it and over a planned public space.

It's also been set back from Marshwall in part to provide a small outdoor space and help break up from the ground what would otherwise be a skyscraper canyon - there will be no wall to wall towers here unlike New York.

The tower will be clad in opaque, transparent and translucent with each face of the building having a different façade treatment making some sides of the building solid and giving others a transparent pattern. The curving extruded wedge will be clad in blue glass with continuous vertical aluminium fins running up it giving it a feeling of height whilst the podium will contrast with the blue glass by having mustard shaded glazing arranged in a rectangular patchwork.

This won't be the last proposal for the area. Towers are also planned at 30 Marshwall, Arrowhead Quay, and another couple of Cuba Street next door. In all it will see five of between perhaps 90 metres and 127 right next to each other.
