Australian contractors Multiplex have been tipped as the winners of a preconstruction contract for a 50 storey residential tower due to be part of the £120m Arena Central scheme.
It is understood that this means Multiplex will be advising the 50/50 joing venture team on the design of the tower as well as construction techniques for the difficult city centre site. Miller has no experience with high-rise structures and so approached a number of high-rise specialists to advise them on their next move.
A source from within Miller said "the contract was awarded last week but has yet to be announced. Multiplex beat high-rise specialists Canary Wharf and Laing O'Rourke and as a result is now in top position to win the contract for the construction of the tower."
The tower already has outline planning permission and now Multiplex are onboard, both Miller and Andy Ruhan feel confident they can have a detailed planning application submitted early next year.
The tower is said to have "massive support" from the council who see it as a "cornerstone" of its development strategy. Once complete, it will be the tallest building outside London and be one of the tallest buildings of its kind in Europe
