Boris Approves Quartet Of Projects

London Mayor, Boris Johnson, has given his approval to four tall projects in London as part of his first look over planning applications in the capital.

The schemes the Mayor won't be opposing are 1 Park Place near Canary Wharf, a new 197 metre tall office skyscraper, and 18 storey office development called Westminster Place in Lambeth by Sheppard Robson that is a redevelopment of the existing York House.

Also getting the thumbs up is the North East Quadrant, a development by British Land near the Euston Tower designed by Wilkinson Eyre, and 100 George Street in Croydon.

This doesn't mean that the schemes are actually approved as the Mayors nod is a layer of oversight applied by his office that allows them to be looked at on a London-wide basis with the Mayor having the power to refuse permission if needs be.

If they get through that layer of the planning process they are passed on for their respective local councils to decide directly although in some cases the Mayor's office may actually be giving their final report on a proposal after it has been approved by a local council as they have this time with Westminster Place which was approved by Lambeth Council in April.

This is the first time the recently elected mayor has made these decisions, but despite fears from some he would be totally anti high-rise Boris is not issuing blanket refusals, something that was never a prospect as it would be committing political suicide despite all the strong words spoken by the new Tory administration in London.

The real judge for the Mayor will be looking at how he treats more contentious projects that Ken Livingstone would have likely approved and none of the four schemes reviewed are particularly controversial.
