Other Information

  • St Vincent's Church in Caythorpe is one of only four churches in England to have a double nave, in this case supported by a trio of pillars.
  • The crocheted spire was damaged by lightning on the 30th of December 1859 and rebuilt the following year by architect, George Gilbert Scott. This saw a height reduction of 10 feet (almost exactly 3 metres).
  • Also damaged by the lightning strike were medieval doom paintings underneath the spire. They remained in their damaged form until they 1960s when they were painting over. Funds permitting, restoration would be possible.
