Other Information

  • Department store owner and developer John Barker started purchasing much of the land along Kensington High Street by 1895. This was gradually merged into one site.
  • Starting in 1930 came the plans to build department stores for both Barkers and Berry & Tom that would fill several blocks in one continuous building. Work began in 1931 with the Derry & Tom store opening in 1933. Development of the rest was phased and interrupted by World War 2 which meant that completion of the scheme only occurred in 1958.
  • Punctuating the long and wide facade are two stone staircase towers with glass lanterns at their top and flagpoles above. Sculptural detail can be seen on them in the form of different types goods that the shops sold, with the modes of transport and delivery above them including lorries, trains, freighters and early jets. The name "Barkers" can be seen at the top denoting the original developer.
  • Although the department stores have been closed and converted to office space, the entrance and basement remains open to the public with original Art Deco detailing and is now occupied by Whole Foods.
