London Penta Hotel

Other Information

  • Following the "success" of the Royal Garden Hotel on Kensington High Street, Seifert won a commission to design what would be the largest hotel in the world with 2,000 rooms.
  • The hotel was part of a British government masterplan that would see 20 large hotels of 500 or more rooms built on the main routes between central London and Heathrow Airport.
  • A planning application was never filed. The sheer scale of the scheme proved unpopular with the planning authorities, and in particular that it would interrupt views from the nearby Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens so the project was scaled down into the Holiday Inn tower that stands on Gloucester Road today.
