Carlton Hotel

  • Carlton Hotel, London

Other Information

  • The Carlton Hotel was designed alongside Her Majesty's Theatre, now the location of the Phantom of the Opera musical in London. Only the theatre now survives.
  • Having lost control of the Savoy Hotel, development of the Carlton was taken over by Cesar Ritz as a direct rival to his old hotel and was immediately successful with Edward, Prince of Wales, being a regular guest.
  • The coronation of the Prince of Wales was to be a triumph for the hotel, however the expensive events that the newly crowned king had been invited too were cancelled after he fell ill. The resulting stress from the financial and organisational mess caused Cesar Ritz to have a breakdown and hand over control to chief chef Escoffier. The hotel remained profitable until the Second World War but had by then lost much of its shine.
  • The hotel operated successfully until it was badly damaged during the London Blitz of 1940 when the hotel rooms were closed as a result. The bar and grill continued to operate whilst the habitable part of the hotel was taken over by the British government. Left empty at the end of the war, the hotel was never repaired and the lease was sold to the New Zealand government in 1949.
  • The building was finally demolished in 1957-1958 and is now the site of New Zealand House, the listed tower designed by Gollins, Melvin and Ward.
