Other Information

  • The history of Bristol Cathedral began in 1140 when it was founded as St Augustine's Abbey. The oldest part still standing is the chapter house which dates from around 1165, and the Elder Lady Chapel from 1220 although some stonework remains in the cathedral that was carved during Saxon times.
  • In 1298 work started on rebuilding the Norman abbey church in the more contemporary perpendicular style but the new church was still incomplete when the Reformation happened in 1539 and its nave was demolished rather than be left standing half built.
  • As part of the reforms of the Church of England it was made a cathedral of the new Diocese of Bristol in 1542.
  • It wasn't until the Victorian times that the cathedral was finally rebuilt with a completed nave. The two towers on the western end were finished in 1888
  • Bristol Cathedral is what is known as a "hall church". This means that the nave, aisles and choir all at the same height. It is the only "hall church" in Britain which is a cathedral.
  • Bristol Cathedral has taken longer to build than any other church or cathedral (and possibly structuer) on the planet.
