The first Chancellor of Bristol University was Henry Overton Wills III, who had donated £100,000 (equivalent to £6m today) to making the university independent. His death in 1911 prompted the construction of the Gothic Revival Wills Memorial Building by his sons, George Alfred Wills and Henry Herbert Wills.
The structure is actually reinforced concrete and Bath and Clipsham stone facades have merely been attached to the outside of the tower covering up the modernity of it somewhat.
