St Mary's Church was paid by some of the unspent ransom money for the release of Frederick Vyner who was killed by his kidnappers. Faced with this significant cash surplus the George Frederick Samuel Robinson decided to build the church as a monument to his dead brother-in-law.
The interior theme of the church is based along the William Blake ideas duality in "Paradise Lost and Paradise Found".
The chancel of the church is particularly notable utilising blue, red and green marble together and showing what the architect, William Burges, could do with an almost unlimited budget.
The belfry provides a particularly impressive space due to the fact that the windows of it are carried up inside the spire creating a large vertical area.
