Other Information

  • The atrium at the north entrance for use by the public, whilst on the southern side it contains a private atrium for students and staff on a raised platform, suspended from steel girders over the ground floor lecture hall.
  • The use of the portholes as windows creates a deliberate ambiguity about the building making it impossible to actually gauge the number of floors inside. These windows in turn dictate the floor-to-floor dimensions. They are a surprisingly tall 4.547 metres for a college in order to accommodate two rows of 1.8 metre diameter windows.
  • The distinctive fašade is made up of 28,000 anodised aluminium tiles based on the patterns of Morris wallpapers. These were designed with the help Cambridge mathematician Sir Roger Penrose.
