Building Rating Other Information
- The Eiffel Tower saw a number of lookalikes spring up in England with varying success. The lasting impact has been made by the Blackpool Tower.
- The building was first conceived by Blackpool's then Mayor, John Bickerstaffe, when he saw the Eiffel Tower during the 1889 Great Paris Exhibition.
- The tower employs over five million bricks, 2,533 tonnes of iron and 94 tonnes of cast steel and the structure is designed so that if it were to ever collapse it would in a westerly direction into the sea rather than taking out surrounding streets.
- The structure features a series of metal beams, with the legs braced every nine metres with supports adding a lattice-work of girders.
- Powering the original lifts were twin cylindered Crossley gas engines that would move the elevators at the rate 1.65 metres per second.
- The Blackpool Tower is a member of The World Federation of Great Towers. The (WFGT) is an association of tall towers and skyscrapers from around the world, created in 1989. The key criterion for inclusion in the WFGT is that the building in question must have a public observation deck. There are 23 towers.
