Father and son team Charles and Edward worked on this building from 1861 to 1871 having picked up the commission when it was dropped by Pugin. The spire was built in 1867 with Edward Joseph Hansom adding the baptistery in 1871.
Some such as Nikolaus Pevsner have pointed out that the church clashes completely with the Georgian surroundings of Bath and can perhaps be seen in the context of Gothic Revival revulsion at the classicism on display in the city. Even today St John's Church dominates the skyline of Bath.
