Downside Abbey Church is the product of many different architects including transepts by Archibald Matthias Dunn and Edward Joseph Hansom in 1882, the choir by Thomas Garner in 1905, and the nave by by Giles Gilbert Scott which although started in 1925 remains essentially unfinished. The tower was only completed in 1938.
The Lady Chapel by Sir Ninian Comper contains the gruesome remains of a number of saints including John Roberts, Ambrose Barlow, and Thomas de Cantilupe.
Today Downside Abbey Church is one of only three Roman Catholic basilicas in England.
