Other Information

  • The Institute of Education is an attempt at fitting a large Brutalist building into the more traditional street plan of this part of Bloomsbury with the repetition of glass clad blocks set between taller central shafts.
  • Although many of the parts of the design are typical of Lasdun he also drew on the inspiration of one of architectures leading concrete specialists, Louis Kahn with features like an exposed staircase.
  • Lasdun's plans were not however completed as the building started construction on the cusp of the decline of Brutalism and Modernism and by the late 1970s it was considered too much to continue clearing parts of Bloomsbury to extend it.
