Other Information

  • The Leeds Arena has been a long term project for the city, and the local authority carried out an in depth feasibility study into developing one. Following this, they went out to potential operators and developers to choose a preferred operator and developer.
  • SMG were chosen as the prefered operator in 2008, and Leeds City Council decided to develop the arena itself on a central site owned by themselves. The developer decision has prompted one of the other two bidders to take legal action as Leeds City Council were not on the original shortlist.
  • Construction enabling works of the 13,500 seat arena has started on site in September 2010, for completion in 2012. It will be one of the leading 'super-theatre' format purpose built arenas in the country. The chosen location of the Arena will be in the busy University Quarter, and it's landmark status will be highlighted by its neighbouring 37 and 27 storey buildings positioned at either end of the site.
