  • Birmingham Council House is the production of a design competition which received 29 entries, with the two leading ones, a goth design by Martin & Chamberlain and the neo-classical entrant of Yeoville Thomason.
  • Construction of the first phase ran from 1874 to 1879 and a second phase from 1881-1885. Both are by Yeoville Thomason.
  • A further third phase and additional extensions plus Venetian remodelling of parts of the design were done by Ashley & Newman from 1911 to 1919.
  • The Clock Tower, is better known as Big Brum. Originally it featured a substantial monumental flagpole but this has since been removed.
