  • This is a new re application for redevelopment of a site that previously had a ten floor building approved on it.
  • The scheme was engineered by Ramboll who were mindful of the design requirement that should allow Crossrail to be built underneath the site. As a result the main structure of the building sits on a raft that has been raised 8 metres above ground level with piling either side of the planned tunnel route. This translates into the fact that the ground level of the site has been raised by approximately 2.5 metres.
  • Above this initial ground level is the glazed double-height lobby with steel columns cutting through it to distribute the weight of the twelve floors above.
  • The building has been clad in a distinctive metallic look that employs brass and gold shingles orientated towards the west. The intention of this is to take advantage of the setting sun which should hit this facade directly and create a strong contrast with the blue and green glass of the office blocks that surround it. This should also provide illumination into the public areas it overlooks that would otherwise be in shadow at this particular time of day.
  • The orientation of the building towards the west also helps maximise the commercial potential of the penthouse suites of the hotel which will face the setting sun and have optimal views in the evening.
