Other Information

  • The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park London was originally constructed as a luxury apartment building known as Hyde Park Court with 147 serviced apartments. Only three years later it was sold and converted into the Hyde Park Hotel.
  • At the time it was proposed, it was to be the tallest apartment building in London surpassing Queen Anne's Mansions, and the city's answer to the Dakota Building, a similarly grand apartment building that overlooked Central Park in New York City. The resulting design however proved hugely controversial due to the height of the building with parliament even having a debate on whether or not to prevent the Hyde Park Court from being over 60 feet tall. This failed and the following year work began on a hundred foot plus building.
  • The hotel proved so popular that a ninth floor of accommodation was added in 1907 creating another layer of penthouse suites.
  • Although now one building, the distinct appearance of two blocks can still be seen with the shorter northern block overlooking Hyde Park and the taller southern block rising behind it. From the air a clear H shape is visible with a rooftop extension and central lift core connecting the two blocks together and the west and east courtyards providing the outdoor space for the building.
