Other Information

  • The abbey was originally founded in 1070 by Queen Margaret as the intended christian centre of royalty in Scotland with more Scottish monarchs buried there than any site apart from Iona.
  • In 1304 the English burned the entire complex and it was rebuilt.
  • The reformation saw the abbey looted in 1560 and what was not demolished fell into disrepair. Only the nave was spared and it now forms the heart of the church that is used on site.
