Other Information

  • This is the City of Liverpool's Roman Catholic cathedral.
  • Originally there were plans for a massive domed cathedral designed by Sir Edwin Luytens which would be larger than St Peters in Rome. Construction of the crypt started but was stopped following the outbreak of World War 2.
  • After the end of the war faced with rationing and crippling costs it was decided to scale down the design and a new architect, Sir Frederick Gibberd was brought in. His design was consecretated in 1967.
  • The shape of the cathedral is circular and spiked to represent the crown of thorns Jesus wore on his head. The structure with its ribs, columns and buttresses, is therefore architectural in its nature.
  • The lantern tower at the top rises to a height of 21 feet and weighs almost 2,000 tonnes. To construct it one of the largest cranes in the world at the time was used, a G280B Babcock-Weitz which was placed in on the area the altar now sits. The crane then constructed the lantern around itself before being dismantled.
  • The nave floor is 61 metres in diameter, the ring beam is 23.7 metres in diameter and stands 38.4 metres above the nave floor. The roof is 67 metres high, and the pinnacles rise above it for another 21.3 metres.
  • The exterior material is concrete which has not lasted well, it regularly leaks and has provided worse reliability than 600 year old traditional cathedrals.
