Other Information

  • St Andrews Cathedral was once the largest building in Scotland at 108.75m long.
  • When intact it had, besides a central tower, six turrets, of which two at the east and one of the two at the west extremity, rising to a height of 30m remain.
  • The building was stripped of its lead and other valuables during the 1559 Reformation and not long after the central tower collapsed destroying the north wall. As with many scottish cathedrals it was then used by locals as a quarry.
  • Ruins remain over 30m tall today although little remains of the church except its two ends.
