Other Information

  • The Tolbooth once housed the Town Clerk's office, council hall and city prison. The Tolbooth therefore provided the backdrop for the city's witch trials and hangings!
  • As the city expanded in the Victorian era, the Tolbooth buildings were gradually demolished by the City Improvement Trust, leaving behind the steeple as a monument to the city. The last part of the Tolbooth, steeple aside was demolished in 1921.
