Other Information

  • Finnieston Crane is officially known as Stobcross Crane but it is never called this by Glaswegians as the commonly used name instead relates to the quay it overlooks.
  • The crane has a huge cantilever jib 77 metres long and is capable of lifting up to 175 tonnes directly from the ships to the railway which stood next to it. Access to the cab is via an electric lift, or if one prefers a staircase.
  • Worldwide only sixty of this type of crane were built, six of which were on Glasgow's Clydeside area. Today four of those remain out of a worldwide total of only fifteen.
