Other Information

  • The construction of the building was such an event that some 600,000 people, at time almost the entire population of the city, attended the ceremony to lay the first foundation stone on the 6th of October, 1883.
  • Originally budgeted at 150,000 the growing extravagance of the project and the need for Glasgow to compete with similar schemes in other British cities like Manchester and Sheffield saw the eventual cost of the building rise to 578,232 in 1890.
  • The friezes on the outside of the building in the spandrels of the second floor by John Mossman are heavily neo-classical and display the various sources of wealth of Glasgow ranging from Engineering and Shipbuilding to Farming and Coopering.
  • Combined with a statue of Queen Victoria, the images of commercial prosperity, and a cenotaph erected outside to commemorate World War One, the building should be viewed in the context of a celebration of the British Empire at its peak.
  • The technology featured in Glasgow City Chambers was such it was the first large public building in the United Kingdom to have full electric lighting throughout.
