Other Information

  • Within only a few months of St Katherine's Dock closing, Taylor Woodrow had bought the site for 1.5 million mindful of how close it was to the City of London and that it was a prime development area. On it they constructed a new hotel for Thistle with a cruciform design that steps back on the upper storeys to reduce its mass.
  • This tower was featured heavily in the John Wayne film Brannigan which was filmed at the time it was still considered a high-tech structure. The 1986 Biggles movie was also set extensively in an around the hotel with the hero even staying in one of the penthouses.
  • The hotel is directly adjacent to both Tower Bridge and the Tower of London which has made it highly controversial thanks to its Brutalist architecture.
