Other Information

  • Constructed on the heavily bombed Golden Lane Estate, Great Arthur House is the first residential tower block in London to be built that was over 50 metres in height, and indeed the first one to breach the 100 foot height limit in the City of London. The decision to go for something tall was done specifically because it was felt that shorter buildings were less elegant.
  • The unusual concrete wave on the roof helps animate it as well as conceal the plant machinery such as lifts and water supply that run the tower. Off it is a roof garden that takes advantage of three storeys including the incorporation of the plant areas, and even a pond for tenants just as Unité d'Habitation has. These are all details that give the impression this building was intended as a showpiece to prove that high-rise living in council blocks was not only possible, but desirable for those who would occupy them.
  • Elsewhere, other amenities for residents include projecting balconies for each of the apartments, whilst every flat also has its very own hobby room and the glazing reaching two thirds of the internal height of each floor maximised light and views. The apartments were easily customisable thanks to the sliding interior walls.
  • Even touches like the yellow paneled cladding show this was supposed to be a bright building, not merely a functional piece of high-rise housing that the later Brutalist blocks postured as.
