Broadcasting Place Also known as Blenheim Walk

Other Information

  • Thanks to the regional BBC recently moving into purpose built studios, this has created the opportunity for the comprehensive redevelopment of the old BBC Broadcasting studios site into a student village, with a multi level building up to 23 storeys with an enclosed courtyard, with new and retained listed buildings as a facility for four departments of Leeds Metropolitan University.
  • The development also includes replacement accommodation for the local Blenheim Baptist Church, landscaping and other facilities such as an internet cafe and exhibition space.
  • The most distinctive feature of the development is the Cor-Ten steel cladding and the angled faceted elevations. These are said to derive from both the geological rock formations that can be found in the Yorkshire Dales, and the sculpture of Henry Moore that would frequently employ metallic finishes textured in a similar way to Broadcasting Places cladding.
  • The 23-floor final design is a further revision to the 18-storey scheme that was approved in 2005. Construction commenced on this in August 2007 and the tower topped out late in 2008. Completion was in September 2009, just in time for the new university year to begin.
