Other Information

  • Carlisle Cathedral originally had a spire but this collapsed along with the tower leading to budgetary cut backs on the construction programme that saw the eastern bays of the cathedral excluded from the building of vaulting.
  • The building became a victim of the English Civil War when six of the bays were knocked down to provide material for other damaged buildings in the city.
  • The result of this architectural vandalism is that Carlisle Cathedral is one of the smallest in England at only 73 metres long.
