Images Other Information
- Plans for a large tower to be built at Holloway Circus in Birmingham City Centre were first aired in 1998 and a competition was started to build a tower which would act as a gateway to the city and act as a catalyst for regeneration in the area.
- Two proposals were put forward, one from Cala Homes and another by Beetham Group. The Cala proposals consisted of two 30 storey round glass tower each 90m tall. The Beetham proposal was of a single, 44 floor round fronted tower with spires reaching 192m high.
- Beetham Group won the competition and planning permission was latter granted. However the tower was called in by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) as it breached height limits enforced after the 9/11 attacks in New York City.
- The tower was then shortened to 40 floors and 122m to roof. The large spires were removed from the design and a number of sky gardens planned to be in the tower taken out.
- Construction on the tower started in late 2003 and completion is set for late 2005.
- Once completed, it will be the tallest building in the UK outside London until the 171m Beetham Tower in Manchester is finished in 2006.
- The top 3 floors of the tower will be divided into 6 triplex apartments with 5 bedrooms and their own private balcony. Starting prices start at just under £2,000,000 but prices are expected to rise and surpass £3,000,000.
