Building Rating Other Information
- The tower was originally planned back in 1964 to have a larger footprint with attached podium buildings, but a single local householder refused to sell her house for years, so in the end the developer relented and built only the tower on the island site that it stands today.
- The unusual shape of the tower comes from what appears to be the 96 projecting bay windows, four per floor or one for each corner.
- This effect is created in reality by drawing a square floorplate, and then slicing the corners off to create octagons. Above, the next floorplate is set at 45 degree angle to the previous one, and this pattern is repeated on all but the ground floors creating the appearance that has seen it given the nickname "the 50p piece".
- Set over a concrete structural frame, mosiac tile cladding and 800 aluminium windows constitute the vast majority of the building exterior.
- The building stands on a tight site, car park access had to be maintained throughout, and thus when it come to externally renovating it in 2007 the contractor Triton lacked the usual space for such work. This was further compounded by the unusual shape.
- The original engineers plans by Ove Arup had to be viewed to ensure that the building could hold the scaffolding, and even then it had to be done with specially designed structural beams and back props, the bill of which came to £200,000, or a third of the refurbishment budget. Renovation work finished in 2008.
